Niki Lauda says it would be wrong for next year's tyres to only be tested in Europe
Pirelli are keen to test in warmer climates such as Bahrain next year as they introduce new, wider tyres for the radically different cars that are set to be introduced next year.
However, teams are understood to be against the idea, preferring to keep testing in Europe on cost grounds.
But Mercredes' Niki Lauda thinks that teams should want to test somewhere warmer.
"It would be madness to test the new cars and tyres only in Europe," he told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. "What happens if it rains?"
If Formula One tests are to take place outside of Europe, all teams must agree unanimously to the decision.
