More overtaking and pitstops in 2016

Formula One this season has offered more action than in the previous two seasons.

Auto Motor und Sport has calculated that in the first half of the 2016 season, more overtaking moves and more pit stops have taken place than in the same races in 2015 and 2014.

The German magazine left Azerbaijan and Germany out of the calculations, as these Grands Prix were not on the calendar last year.

Regarding some overtaking, China was until now the major outlier. As many as 128 times a driver made a passing move in Shanghai. The lowest was Hungary with only eleven successful overtaking manoeuvres.

On average, this year the average number of overtakes per race stands at 48.8, compared to 29.3 in 2015 and 41.9 in 2014.

The races that started on a wet track in Monaco and Britain boost the numbers in terms of pit stops as well. Pirelli taking three compounds to each race this year also contributes to the higher number of pit stops.

On average this season there are 44.6 pit stops per race, compared to 33.2 in 2015 and 37.6 in 2014. China had the most again with a total of 66 pit stops.
