Turn 1 at Bahrain to be named after Schumacher

The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) have officially named Turn 1 in honour of Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher, who still remains in a coma after a terrifying ski-accident back in December, was the first driver to claim Pole Position and win the race on the track back in 2004 when the Gulf held its maiden Grand Prix.

Turn 1, which is a tight right-handed hairpin, has been the scene of many overtakes and incidents throughout the years, none moreso than the infamous battle between Michael's brother Ralf and Takuma Sato in 2004, which saw both drivers suffering damage.

Aside from claiming the first victory, he also finished 2nd in 2006 and at his final race at the circuit in 2012, the German claimed the final point in 10th.

The Schumacher family approved the proposed idea from the BIC when approached by them in February. An official unveiling for the corner name is yet to have been given a date.
