'Ricciardo still better overall package than Verstappen'

If Renault brings its new engine to Monaco, the French marque may only be able to supply one version apiece to the two French-powered teams. Although Renault has actually slated Canada as the debut race for the 35 horse power, 5-tenths-per-lap power unit upgrade, officials are considering fast-tracking the process to Monaco next weekend.

But Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that the problem with that plan could be a lack of spare parts, meaning only one works Renault and one Red Bull gets the upgrade for the streets of the Principality. For Red Bull, it might be a difficult decision. Does Max Verstappen, F1's new teen winner, get the Tag-Heuer branded upgrade, or should it go to the more experienced Daniel Ricciardo?

"Very clearly, I would give the engine to Ricciardo," Niki Lauda, the F1 legend and Mercedes' team chairman, said. "Max Verstappen is the man of the future, but despite all the hype about his (Max's) first victory, you have to say that Ricciardo is still the better overall package," he added. (GMM)

They should give the upgraded engine to Ric, and then we can smile if / when Ves finishes ahead of him!

don't forget he's a mercedes man. I would give it to verstappen since he seems to have momentum.

    But i am a bit biased ;)

  • I for one think Ricciardo deserves it more, a decent compensation for their failed strategy in previous race.

The goal for Red Bull was to win the race and they did, so it wasn't a failed strategy.

Only if you're a Ricciardo fan or an anti-Max fan you think it failed, otherwise they simply got what they wanted.

    • I think they wanted to win anyway. And winning with Max just meant a big publicity boost!

    • He went from leading to limping into fourth, so I'd say it failed. They could never have predicted the busted tyre, that I agree on, but they could've done a better job in adjusting Ricciardo's strategy to the ongoing track situation. This is, of course, just my opinion. Im not either of those options, but that is what I think was going on.

    • I wont exactly be sad if Verstappen gets past Ricciardo, I dont dislike him (but he needs to mature a bit). It was nice to see him win, I think we all can agree on that, but to say he'll win easily over Ricciardo when they are on equal strategies is to underestimate the aussie.

  • After the baiting they did with his strategy to fool Ferrari? He needs to get the engine. But even with that engine in Max's car Ricciardo can mop the floor with Max.

Of course Ricciardo deserves the goodies. Does that even need clarification?

Yeah the strategy of RB with Ricciardo failed, but if Max would have spinned on those tires then that would have been the failed strategy. Hindsight is a beautiful thing.

Who cares what Lauda has to say about what happens at RB.

  • I think it's only fair to give Ricciardo the new engine. He is longer connected to the team.
It will make clear if the drivability is better rthen the old engine, which is off course more reliable and that's a bigger issue in Monaco than power.

Ricciardo should get the new engine first. The good thing is that in Monaco it's less of an issue than on other tracks. Max could still surprise.

Hahaha...wen the flag drops, the bullshit stops...Verstappen only needed 1 weekend to bring Red Bull a Victory. Riccardio could not deliver it 2 years. Enough excuses, but this is a hard fact, better overall package?
We will have a great laugh when Verstappen beats Ricciardo in Monaco.
The excuses and moaning wel grow bigger and bigger...Sainz, Kvyat, Ricciardo al do...Verstaopen keeps his cool and just answers on track...
