Williams chief technical officer Paddy Lowe claims that Robert Kubica's experience is very important to the team going forward. On Tuesday, Kubica was announced as Williams' official reserve and development driver, missing out on a full-time race seat to Sergey Sirotkin.

Kubica will drive the simulator frequently for the Grove-based squad, and will take part in free practice sessions throughout the 2018 season. Despite having not held an official F1 role since 2011, Lowe claims that the Pole's experience will be crucial for the team.

"We anticipate Robert will make a strong technical contribution to the team," Lowe said. "Using his wealth of experience in track testing, simulator work, and support to the race drivers and engineers at every race.

"We’d like to congratulate Robert on what he has achieved so far. To overcome his injuries, return to fitness, and drive a Formula 1 car again is a remarkable achievement, and one that few considered possible.  He is a driver I have admired for many years and I am personally very happy to be working with him towards our 2018 championship."

  • Yeah... experience is vital that they chose to put essentially two rookies in charge. Can anyone even remember the last time Williams didn't have at least one pay-driver?
