Tost 'doesn't care about families' if calendar expands

Franz Tost says that he doesn't care about the families of Formula 1 employees amid talk that the F1 calendar will expand beyond 21 races.

Adding more races has been part of F1 commercial rights holder Liberty Media's agenda for some time, but certain teams have spoken out against such a plan for an expansion.

Next year, Vietnam and The Netherlands will join the calendar while the future remains unclear for Spain and Mexico. In the coming years however, more races could be added to the schedule to bring it beyond its current number.

Some teams have made the argument that additional races would have big strains on the team members and their families due to the significant amount of time they would spend away from home.

But Tost doesn't see an issue with adding more races, as long as the teams are supplied with the funds to comfortably do so.

"I don't care about their families. There are 52 weekends, so we can have 26 races. I see no problem. If we get the money for all the races, that's the important thing. Then I don't have a problem."

Steiner both agrees and disagrees with Tost

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner agrees with Tost in respect to needing the money to go to more races, but insists that he cares about the families as it makes for happy workers.

"I care about the families. Because then the people working are happy. I think if we reorganised a little bit the weekend, how we run it, we maybe could make some savings there.

"With days at the track. We cannot save days but we can adjust it a little bit. I agree with Franz, if the new races bring financial benefits, why not do it? But we need to be clever about it and try to find the days somewhere else."

Reactions of F1 fans

We are curious about your reaction as fans. With an extension of the calendar, this also means fewer free weekends and more time on the couch and behind the television. We would like to read in the comments your opinion of whether you are for or against extending the calendar.

  • I agree with Steiner. A happy worker is a productive worker

  • Need a balance, if you were in the Navy you could be away for weeks on end, its a lifestyle choice, not saying it's easy but it's a hell of of good thing for the CV I think. 26 is doable.....just about.

I would welcome 2 or 3 more GP's per season. Specially if the title fight is interesting, but that is not the case this year :)

Yes, if it is a better spectacle than the current one then surely it would make sense to make it longer.
