After an almost three month break from the last race at the beginning of October, the championship headed to the Prince George Circuit in South Africa.

Jim Clark started the race from pole position and was in control until he retired with around a quarter of the race to go. Back then, only the five best scores from the nine-race championship counted towards the championship, meaning that if Clark had won the race (what would have been his fourth win of the year), he would have been crowned champion.

Instead it was Hill who took his fourth win of the season, and his third from the last for races, to lay claim to the championship for the first time in his career.
