Sauber need to "think outside the box" - Monisha Kaltenborn

Sauber boss Monisha Kaltenborn has said that they needs to "think outside the box" if it is to beat Manor to 10th in this year's constructors' championship.
The Swiss team has so far failed to sore this season, being the only team to not have any points.
Now Kaltenborn has said that the team needs to alter their approach if they are to end 2016 on a high.
"We need to take different approaches," Kaltenborn told Autosport.
"When it comes to strategy we have to try something different because if you follow the mainstream then we know it's going to be very difficult to be in a position to get the opportunity and get the points.
"So absolutely we have to think outside the box otherwise we remain in our comfort zone and then it's not going to get us anywhere.

But to ditch the 2017 spec unit will probably cost alot in the long run. More free engine dev is a powerful thing. Toro Rosso had arguable one of the better chassis this year, but even so the lack of power lead to them crawling down the field, and that was with the token system limiting the current spec's evolution. 2017 is probably the worst season to ditch a current spec unit. But I could be wrong, hope I will be wrong too, would be nice to see a competitive Sauber again.

Just throwing the dice and see what comes up. Where's that 'out of the box', I fail to see, looks more like the comfort zone to me. But maybe I'd do the same in her place, certainly in the first half of the season they might just have the package to score some points. That would beat this year by far.

Time will tell if going with the 2016 engines is a good strategy move. With the increased downforce levels and grip, the top end performance of the engines may not be as big a factor as aero, which they seem to be focusing on. They aren't ditching the 2017 spec, just the engine, which may or may not be the deciding factor. One has to assume that with the token system gone, the engines will probably be much more advanced at the end of the season than they are at the beginning of next year/end of this year. I think one also has to assume that with the increased funding and focus on the chassis next year they will also be developing the 2018 car for the latest and greatest engine. It sounds like they are looking at 2017 as a development year. It's hard to believe that their long term target is simply to be ahead of Manor. Maybe it's just time for Monisha to go.
